I gave in and downloaded the World of Warcraft trial edition.
I have been avoiding this game like the plague ever since I’ve had a PC that could run it, mostly because I was wary of the high addiction factor it’s been said to have, and most importantly, because of the goddamn monthly fee. I have been playing it for less than a week now and my overall impression on this game is:
MEH.
Yay it’s another fucking grinding fest! Mission after mission after mission and I have yet to see something that makes me say WOW! (pun intended) and hook me up on the game to the point of actually making me buy the retail version and become a slave to monthly payments.
I can see this game becoming more fun in a party or guild environment, but I still get that “been there, done that -millions of times” feeling I get from all MMO’s, free or paid. I am aware that this game has some things that make it stand out from the other wannabe online fantasy games, but unfortunately the meat of this game is reserved for higher level characters, anf getting there is a fucking chore, if not a full time job. I honestly do not see whatever it is makes people so obsessed with this game.
So what have I accomplished in WoW? I wish I fucking knew. All I know is that I’m a night elf with huge-ass ears and glowing eyes who suddenly pops up in the middle of an enchanted forest that happens to be in some kind of peril, and I must save it and it’s innocent little critters by doing a bunch of fucking errands that I might as well be doing in real life.
“Oh, you must slay 15 Rabid Deadly Wolves and 12 poisonous Giant Dread Spiders for me to prepare some antidote for my stupid fucking friend who went treasure hunting and was bit in the ass by a walking tree mutant! Do you accept this mission? (Y/N)”
Damn, bitch! you’re like 30 levels over me and I gotta do all your shit at level 1? Fuck you and all your goddamn forest critters. I rather go to the tavern and get fucked up with some Dwarf Ale and try and score me some elf maiden ass*.
*Speaking of Elf Whores, DO NOT GO TO THIS SITE.
Needless to say I’m level 10 and I still don’t have a single fucking goddamn idea about what’s going on in the Warcraft universe. Something about a giant tree and elder gods acting like bitches. Don’t know if I will care at some point. All signs point to “no”.
Even though I burned out on Guild Wars, I would still choose it over WoW any day, with it’s “MMO Lite” mechanic, tighter game world and missions, and FREE GAMEPLAY. But I’m not gonna compare the two. It’s not fair for Guild Wars. WoW is and will always will be a titanic billion dollar beast. Which has massively failed to impress me.
Oh well. I still have about five days left in my trial. I’ll keep playing it with the hope that maybe when I gain another level something incredibly awesome will happen and my screen will fill with fireworks and a multicolored laser turret will grow out of my fucking ass and obliterate every enemy and annoying forest sprite in my path. Oh and one of those giant tigers you can ride on would be nice. (I know you get those at level 40, shut up)
Anyway, here’s the toon I made (Click thumbnail for a bigger version).
His name’s “Bladegash”, and he’s an unremarkable night elf Rogue, which is like an assassin/thief class.
Why a rogue?
Because rogues do it from behind.

Hmm, I guess I’m a little biased with WoW because its my first true MMO, I do play with some really awesome people, and have only been playing casually for about three months… and I still love it!
by Xtian May 7th, 2008 at 9:17 amI’m equally biased with Guild Wars because it was my first “retail MMO” (I tried Knight Online first, which is completely free and HORRENDOUS). And I can see how WoW can become a blast if you play it with buddies and such or become a member of a nice helpful noob friendly guild, but that hasn’t been the case for me, since I threw myself down this path all alone and without any help, all masochist-like. Maybe since I entered this game with such giant expectations, the fact that it’s a normal MMO (which every other MMO has tried to copy) has kinda spoiled my views on it.
by Kaiser Dämmerung May 7th, 2008 at 1:35 pmI just recently got to dual wield and finally arrived on Darkshore, so it has become a bit more interesting, but still hasn’t convinced me enough to pay.
Yeah, I can see how WoW wouldn’t be very fun without the cool peeps I have to chat with while grinding away on quests and whatnot, and just thinking about all the things I want to try and accomplish has me a bit overwhelmed at times… but so far, still fun. It’s too bad we magically weren’t on the same server, or we could try and play a little.
I really prefer the sexy, gaytastic Blood Elf race but if I wanted to play with my friends I would have to go with the Alliance races. Oh well, my little Dwarf Paladin, Labetty, is sexy in her own cuadrá way.

by Xtian May 7th, 2008 at 7:52 pmMEOW…
HOLY SHIT man, MEOW indeed!
Now I want me a leather daddy elf
Blood elves look so awesome. It’s too bad the Burning Crusade doesn’t have a trial version or I would be all over them.
by Kaiser Dämmerung May 7th, 2008 at 8:18 pmAbsolutely! Blood Elves are the shiznit. I actually have a Blood Elf toon that looks almost exactly like that lovely leather papi, who I level when I wanna play and not have to be social.
AND The male Blood Elf dance emote is actually taken from Napoleon Dynamite’s dance sequence - how awesome is that?? =P
by Xtian May 8th, 2008 at 9:39 amGW also has a Napoleon Dynamite dance routine on their ritualist class, you can see it in this video around the 3:00 mark:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTfeU0REB5k
Also, the Collector’s edition of GW Nightfall has a limited dance routine that puts a frikkin’ disco ball on top of your toon!
by Kaiser Dämmerung May 8th, 2008 at 2:07 pmGoddamn now I wanna play GW
Ya know… I’ve never heard of GW until you. lol. I’m such an MMO noob! Oh well! But that GW video you linked to was pretty fun, it looks really good for being FREE! Thats crazy. Sure $15 isn’t anything to us working adults nowadays, but FREE is still nice! Besides, if you’re in a gaming college, don’t you kinda have to be addicted to some MMO? That’s like a prerequisite, isn’t it?
by Xtian May 8th, 2008 at 11:40 pmWell GW is not entirely free, you still have to buy the retail copy, but you only pay those $40 one time and that’s it. If you want another expansion (which all work as stand alone games and can be bought on their own), you pay for those one time too. And you can buy them from inside the game if you’re too lazy to go to the store.
If you have a chance to download a demo, do so, you migh like it, since it’s much more casual than WoW. Although if you’re interested, I suggest you try the first and third expansions (Prophecies and Nightfall), since the second one I found a bit short and annoying. If you do get into it, let me know and maybe I can pop up and guide you around.
As for the $15 a month, well, I’m on my way to become a broke graduate student so those kinds of expenses are off limits… At least until me and my b/f are financially stable again.
As for gaming during college, teachers and current students there advice everyone to get OFF the MMO’s prior to entering. The thing with the Guildhall is that it has a really demanding schedule and you can easily see yourself working 12-16 hours a day, so time for MMO’s or any other demanding games will be few and far between, and can cause you to miss deadlines and fail projects.
Instead, we get to see the inner workings of said games, but at the expense that we won’t have much time to actually play them for enjoyment, but for research and development.
Classes in the Guildhall don’t start until August, so I have these few months to catch on games, MMO’s, and probably losing this fucking gut.
I just want that damn acceptance letter to ARRIVE ALREADY ARRRGHGHGHG THE WAITING IS KILLING ME!
by Kaiser Dämmerung May 8th, 2008 at 11:57 pmHmmmmm, I might just have to check out a GW demo soon. Te dejo saber if I do, so you can play tour guide.
I had tried FFXI a while ago and holy shit, that was horrible. I love the Final Fantasy universe, but wow, that is probably the most aggravating experience I’ve ever had. Thank god I had only paid $2 for the 2 week trial cd @ Gamestop. I installed it, which took forever to patch, and once I got into the game was so confused and pissed off within ten minutes that I UN-installed it right then and there.
Hehe, well, yeah… I was mostly joking about you being addicted to an MMO while at the Guildhall (which is, yes, an awesome name) because yeah, gaming and advanced schooling don’t always mix well.
Ay mijo, good luck with that “gut”. I too had proclaimed MONTHS ago that I would shed at least 15 lbs., even joined Ballys… and haven’t been to the gym in over a month. Oopsie. It doesn’t help that I just bought Mario Kart Wii, and will probably get GTA4 soon…. =P
I hope you get your letter soon! I remember waiting for my college letters back in the day. Kinda wished I had looked more into what college to go to, but I was mostly just thinking, “I must leave PR… I will go anywhere that accepts me…” lol
by Xtian May 9th, 2008 at 2:31 pmYou haven’t been to Bally’s in a month? I haven’t been to kickboxing classes since CHRISTMAS. Lol.
Hopefully living as a broke ass student will make me control what I eat and help shed a few pounds. Going to Chili’s or Friday’s or Macaroni Grill on a weekly basis spoiled the hell out of me.
